How to Prepare for Legacy Memoir (Ghost)writing

If only organizing documents or recording stories were all the prep a legacy memoir required…

But this work calls on your whole self…and the process invites you to meet yourself in the mirror of your own story.

Here’s how to prepare across multiple dimensions so the experience becomes meaningful, focused, and powerful.

In fact, you can walk through these prompts right now (even if a memoir isn’t on your bingo card) and notice how your story, your voice, your energy… begin to shift.

✨PHYSICALLY

– Create space: Block time for deep conversations, reflection, and potential in-person retreats or recordings.
– Organize materials: Gather journals, photos, letters, awards, voice notes…anything that holds memory or meaning.
– Set the scene: Choose a calm, comfortable environment. Hydration, movement, and rest help keep your nervous system grounded.

✨TACTICALLY

– Clarify your goal: Is this for your family? A private archive? Your legacy body of work? A public release?
– Sketch key chapters or turning points: Not a full timeline, just themes or moments that shaped you.
– Consider permissions: Will others be named? Do any stories require discretion, consent, or anonymization?

✨STRATEGICALLY

– Know your audience: Who is meant to receive or be impacted by this story?
– Define the format: Full memoir? Vignettes? A hybrid of business, legacy, and life? (We’ll shape it together.)
– Anchor the message: What thread of meaning runs through it all? What insight or legacy will outlive you?

✨MENTALLY

– Release perfectionism: This isn’t about writing it right, but writing it real.
– Let go of being the expert: You don’t need to know exactly how to tell it. That’s the beauty of co-creation.
– Expect surprises: Forgotten memories may return. Be open to seeing them through new eyes.

✨EMOTIONALLY

– Let the waves come: Grief, pride, joy, tenderness, regret,… They may all rise. Welcome them.
– Build emotional resilience: Some sessions may feel intense. Have gentle support nearby (walks, tea, silence, a trusted presence).
– Trust the unfolding: Memoirs reveal themselves in layers. You’re not behind. The story meets you where you are.

✨ENERGETICALLY / SPIRITUALLY

– Set intention: Why now? What are you here to release, reclaim, or reweave?
– Create a sacred rhythm: Light a candle. Breathe. Journal. Ground yourself before or after sessions.
– Open to the shift: this is a portal.
Who are you becoming by telling your story?

I’d love to know what stirred, softened, or surprised you as you read.
This is the work. And this is where it begins.
